Next Generation TV is the brand name for ATSC 3.0

Next Generation TV is the brand name for the ATSC 3.0 television standard proposed by America’s Public Television Stations, the AWARN Alliance, the Consumer Technology Association and the National Association Of Broadcasters. The name was first suggested in a Joint Petition for Rulemaking filed in Mid-April 2016.

The FCC’s Media Bureau opened the petition up for comments and reply comments through the 3rd quarter of 2016.

According to the petition, Next Generation TV will offer:

  • Improved home reception
  • Reception on smartphones and tablets
  • Interactivity & integration of content with IP services
  • Enhanced emergency alerts
  • Broadband to consumers
  • Geo-targeting of content
  • Higher definition, like ultra-high definition TV
